News Nº40: Covenant coordinates the garbage issue in Puerto Aventuras

This week, Covenant met with Benny Milan, Secretary of Public Services of the Municipality and Martín Barceló, in charge of garbage collection in the Municipality. Later, we met at the Covenant office with Ricardo Cruz, supervisor of the area and the driver of the truck that provides service to Puerto Aventuras, to coordinate the issue of garbage in the Resort.

From now on, the entire issue of garbage will be coordinated exclusively through Covenant, by virtue of the agreement with the Municipality, for which the owners will be able to make their inquiries directly with Covenant. We will have direct communication with the zone supervisor and the truck driver, as well as the Secretary of Public Services for the cases that warrant it.

Every day, from Monday to Saturday at 6 in the morning, 2 new garbage trucks will enter the Resort. One will be dedicated solely to hotel garbage and the other will deal with garbage from houses and buildings. At the moment there is no service on Sundays due to lack of a driver, but it is expected that later on it will be possible to have the service every day.

Under the coordination of Covenant, the service will be provided for all houses and buildings, without any discrimination. The operators committed to making an effort to put the empty garbage cans in their place and in the event of a problem that does not allow collection, the truck driver agrees to inform Covenant, who will notify the owners with the APP.

In relation to the recycling of garbage, the Municipality considers it an important issue and wants to organize a system of recycling and separation of waste starting in January. We have other meetings planned to discuss this issue and organize it efficiently.

Meanwhile, the truck is going to collect the plastics and cardboard of the people who request it in addition to the domestic garbage. Builders will continue to organize the removal of their construction debris on their own. Covenant will take care of the collection of plant garbage for its members as it has been doing.

On the other hand, the Municipality asked our community to make efforts to facilitate their task by taking the following actions:

* Each owner must commit to pay their property tax on time, which includes the garbage collection fee, and if applicable, catch up taking advantage of discounts for defaulters.

* To facilitate payment, Covenant will make available to the Municipality an office in Punta Celis (next to Gignet) so that taxes can be paid in Puerto Aventuras.

To support the work of the truck operators, they ask the favor of putting the garbage in a tightly closed bag before putting it in the garbage can, having cans with lids for domestic garbage in order to prevent animals from coming to mess it up, and eventually put a block or a stone on the lid to prevent animals from opening it. They also asked to make a small hole in the bottom of the garbage cans so that water does not accumulate, which can sometimes accumulate more than 20 liters, complicating the work of the operators.

* Finally, they ask that vehicles park on one side of the street to avoid blocking access and insist even more on this issue in Punta Celis where they were blocked several times.

The Municipality has shown a lot of goodwill with us on the issue of garbage and they have awarded us with two new trucks, so let’s also make our effort to make life easier for them.
